What are the symptoms of a herniated disc in the neck? Initially there may be just neck pain but usually it progresses to symptoms into the arm or arms. Pain may be associated with arm numbness, tingling and weakness. A large cervical disc herniation may put pressure on the spinal cord and lead to symptoms of bowel or bladder changes, problems with walking or balance, leg weakness or change in gait.
Dr. Seth Neubardt explains what to look for if you suspect a herniated disc in the neck and are trying to make a diagnosis. If you have asked yourself, “Do I have a herniated disc?” then you will want to watch this video to know the symptoms of cervical disc herniation and find out.
Among the symptoms are:
- Neck pain
- Burning in the neck

- Weakness in the arm(s)

Symptoms of Herniated Disc in Neck Indicating an Emergency
If you experience symptoms of a herniated disc in the neck such as progressive numbness that extends into the arm or hand or progressive weakness, and those symptoms become worse by the hour, or you have the severe symptoms listed above, a large cervical herniated disc is likely putting pressure on your spinal cord. These rare symptoms indicate a dangerous condition, generally requiring cervical neck surgery. (Learn more about when a disc herniation in the neck is an emergency.)
